Rats!

I don't care what you say. Anna's rats are adorable. They're called Rufus and Riley.

Peekaboo!

I didn't realise I caught this one doing a big turd mid-shot. This photo is the best! Notice the big sac?

Balls! They're huge!

The hen started pecking at the rat when it went on the ground. I reckon it totally wanted to eat it. Milly the dog just wanted to lick the rats a lot. I noticed she was really going for the balls...

I totally want my own pet rats.

It may still be the last month of winter in Perth but it sure feels like spring. It's still a bit cool, but it's sunny and there are flowers and birds and it's so gorgeous outside you just want to lie out in it all day long. I am so wishing we had a daybed out the back right now. Jason and I had a day to spend together yesterday before he came to work today so we had lunch in Kings Park and went for a walk.

Then we went and visited Jason's friend Cath and her four and a half month old daughter Bridget. She is so cute. And she loves her jolly jumper!
videoJason has flown back to work and I was planning on doing a bit of shopping before I go to my mum and dad's for dinner but it's so beautiful I decided to stay home, throw all the birdseed on the grass out the back of the fence and enjoy the birdlife. I was lying on the couch when I noticed cute little ducklings hanging out with their mum eating seeds. It must be spring!

Another Sunday, another break over.

Well, my time off is nearing its end again. Back to work tomorrow where I will stress over finishing a project on time (for the first time ever, actually). I may have to put in some extra hours at work next week.

I spent three days reorganising and tidying the entire house. And It's done! It's not completely immaculate, but everything has been put away in its place and I even cleaned a few things. As usual I didn't clean the bathrooms. It's a job I put off and put off every break. I went out on Thursday for lunch with some friends and did a bit of shopping in the city. I ate chilli con carne for dinner three nights in a row (leftovers rock!). I weeded the garden beds in front of our house. I went to my parents house for dinner.

And there you have it, the time is gone. I got a lot of me-time this break which I thoroughly enjoyed. Today I've got a couple of friends and my brother and his girlfriend coming for lunch. I really need to get to the shop to buy a few supplies before I start cooking. Hope y'all had a great weekend!

Yay I'm back at home again!

Flew in last night on a much less bumpy flight, no spewing this time, thank goodness! My parents are so great. They came over with my grandmother and cooked dinner here so I got picked up from the airport by my Dad and came home to my favourite dinner, kjöti káli, which is an icelandic meal of meat balls wrapped in cabbage with potatoes and carrots and melted margarine drizzled over the top. Yum yum. Mum and Dad seem to love coming to pick me up from the airport when Jason isn't home, even though I only live 2 minutes drive away from the airport.

It's raining and cold here in Perth, and will be all week apparently. I don't mind at all. I feel like it's been many years since we had so much wintery weather in winter here. The water storage dams are filling up and I think we can safely say we're not having a drought anymore (I don't know how many times they kept telling us we were still in a drought even if it rained).

I uploaded a bunch of old photos from 2002 and 2003 to my flickr last night. Most of them are from Iceland. It sure does bring back memories looking at them. Going to live in Iceland for a couple of years was one of the best things I've ever done. You really get to know yourself when you leave everything you know behind and go to live and work in another country. Before I went back to Iceland, I thought that all western countries were pretty much the same, but the culture is different everywhere you go. I think I can appreciate how immigrants to Australia might feel coming here. A lot of Australians can't appreciate what it's like to come to another country to live. They think that immigrants should be able to just become Australian and adjust to our ways in a very short period of time. There are a lot of subtle things about Australian culture that are difficult to understand without having them explained to you but no one ever explains them. I guess it's because we don't notice so much. I've worked with quite a few foreigners here myself, and it's easy to lose patience, but I went through the same things myself when I lived in Iceland.

I was surprised by how different I felt to the native Icelanders, and I can honestly say that I didn't feel like I quite fitted in there. My family roots come from Iceland, but I am an Australian. Before I went to live there, I always wondered if I was more Icelandic than Australian, and now I know.

I grew up and learnt a lot in the year and a half I lived there. I worked in a slaughterhouse, at a mink farm and the geriatric section of a hospital. I travelled in Europe and had some amazing experiences. I learnt that it takes less energy to show tolerance and patience than it does to get frustrated and angry, and the benefits to it are huge.

Funnily enough I also fell in love with Jason while I was in Iceland. We emailed each other for nearly a year before I came back to Australia, as friends, and I think our strong friendship has made all the aspects of our relationship just, you know, easy. We spend most of our time apart, but we don't experience any relationships difficulties because of that. I think that's special.

Check it out dudes!
This is the photo Jason's mum sent us. I can't wait to see it when I get home tomorrow night. I'll post some more photos then. I can't believe how different it makes the window look for a start. Can't wait to get carpet now. It's a whole 'nother month til JJ and I have a break together though, and I'm pretty sure that on the day we're supposed to have one day together, I have to stay in at work for a course. Total bummer. But oh well. I'll get some blinds this break, I think.

Caterpillars abound at our house

Ew.

For some reason this one liked my shoe. It's got hairs growing out of it!

Improvement of the Television Area

BEFORE:

AFTER:

AND AFTER THAT:

It looks a bit busier with both the xbox and the playstation, and I've put a lamp in the single shelf next to the tv, and taken the hold sticker off it. At some stage Jason will put the unsightly yellow network cable somewhere out of sight, inside the wall or something, but it's going to be a fiddly job. One thing at a time.

Our bedroom is now fully painted, and Jason's Dad is going to put the wallpaper up for us while we're at work. I can't wait to see it when I get home. Then we can get new carpet and blinds and our bedroom will be officially improved. We're going to get onto painting the rest of the house as soon as possible. We just need to find the right colours.

Painting Painting Painting

We emptied out the entire wardrobe so we could paint that as well. You realise how many of your clothes you don't really need when you have to transfer them all to a smaller space. I'll definitely be doing some more culling before we put them all back in. We pulled out the crappy shelves from the bottom and we're going to replace them with something more practical and nice.

1st coat of paint on this wall yesterday.

I did the ceiling in the wardrobe.

Jason finished off all the walls this morning.

Jason painted the second coat on this wall this morning, and we can't see the testers coming through anymore, which hopefully means we won't need a third coat.

After we painted the first coating yesterday we went shopping to see if we could find something to put in the wardrobe and also something to put under the tv. We went to IKEA but didn't find anything really appropriate for our space... we'll keep looking, but I think it might be easier to have something made or build it ourselves. We'll see. We did find something to put in the lounge, however, and hopefully it will be delivered before I go back to work on Tuesday. It's very simple, but perfect for what we need.

After that we went to my mum and dad's for dinner as it was my brother's birthday. He turned 28. We got him a really cool shirt and a global warming mug. It shows a map of the world and when it gets hot the shorelines disappear as the oceans rise. It was kind of an ironic thing, as my bro and I aren't really convinced the globe is actually warming all that much.

I've got to go and start preparing things for the dinner we're having tonight. We making braised leg of lamb again and all the vegies have to be peeled and prepped this morning as it takes 5 hours to cook. And I'm going out for lunch... busy busy busy.

Hi!

Hello there. I guess it's been a bit of a gap in posting for me. Normally I find the time to post some pictures of something, but I was SO busy at work. My boss had me under the pump to finish a certain task, which was really good because it was something I haven't really worked on before, and he showed me what I was supposed to be doing so there were no workers blocks where I hit a wall because I don't know what to do and don't ask someone for help. I've got actual co-workers in my department and I'm showing them bits and pieces all the time, where to find stuff, tricks for doing certain things in certain computer programs, and I've also learnt quite a lot in a very short amount of time from one of them, who has a lot more experience than the people I usually find myself training.

I don't know if you realise this, but the bulk of my work is done on a computer.. there's practically no going out into the field and looking at rocks. At Jundee all the rocks are covered by tens of metres of clay and weathered (almost beyond recognition) rock, so we pretty much have to drill everything we want to look at. I guess the main job of exploration is to figure out which spots would be the best to drill to find out what's under there. Jundee has been drilled almost everywhere but most of the holes are quite shallow. The deeper holes that we drill are exploring uncharted territory. And we have to interpret what we see in the holes and make up a map. Geology is about connecting the dots and you have to have a bit of creativity to convince yourself of what's in between the dots.

Anyway, work is good and I'm loving it. And I don't find myself with much time for posting.

Geezer did his first week of nightshift and then switched to days a couple of days after I got to work. He fell asleep before 8pm almost every single night and would wake up at 1am, 2.30am, anytime way too early, and wouldn't be able to get back to sleep. Because I was there he would have to go over to the internet room to pass the time away. So this was quite a common scene in our room:

I flew home on Tuesday night and before we got to Perth we had to pass through a lot of stormy cloud cover. The flight was very rough for a while and I started to feel nauseous. I can normally fight motion sickness but it was too much for me and when I started to sweat and feel really hot I knew I wouldn't be able to hold it in. I was the only person on the flight to spew although a lot of other people came very close. The guy sitting in front of me was really genuinely scared and people around him were trying to distract him and joke around with him. That's the first time I've spewed on a plane in years.

Jason came home on Wednesday, we have almost the whole break together, which is nice, seeing as we don't see each other as much at work with him doing nightshift half the time. We've made it our mission to finish painting our bedroom and it's going really well. Photos in the next post!

My day in one post

Hello again. Prolific posting this weekend, I know. I went to a baby shower this afternoon, which was kinda fun. The conversation was, as is to be expected, almost entirely about babies and children and being pregnant, and we played some games as well, which were interesting, to say the least!

First off we had to make a penis out of a zucchini, armed only with a vegetable peeler and the mother to be judged which was the best one. Here's my creation:

Handsome isn't it? It won! The losers are on the plate behind it.

Look! Baby themed cupcakes. They were yummy.

Other games that we played included passing the parcel, which was a poo filled nappy (well, the poo wasn't real poo) and when the music stopped if you had the parcel you were out. Last one in won the prize. Then there was scooping cotton balls out of one bowl into another with a big salad spoon, but blindfolded. You knew when you were told that was a good scoop that you didn't get any in that one.

Tonight I went out for dinner with some friends and then we went out to a couple of different clubs. The first one we went to was Deville's. It's a bit out of the centre of town and there are mostly brothels nearby, with names like La Cherie. Deville's has a devilish theme and is fashioned something like a volcano inside. Everything is red and black, with flame shaped railings and fake flame-like lights. And there's a tiny fake volcanic cone in the middle of the dancefloor. It was packed full of arty looking people who could have been going to some sort of fancy dress party. When we got there they made us queue outside for a few minutes before letting us in.

See?

No one left in the meantime, but they still let us come in. The bouncer said that they could only let a few people in at a time or the door bitches would get flustered. Whatever. I took some photos because it did look pretty cool inside. And there were a lot more people in there than I thought there would be.

I found this photo on flickr which is from the foyer of Deville's. Good photo!

They had a couple of cages on either side of the stage and at one stage girls appeared in them and were dancing, but one of the girls looked really really nervous like it was her first time ever working as a dancer in a club. It's been ages since I went to a club where they had dancers. I took a video..I guess I'll post it, but the sound is bad, and it's on its side and you can barely see, but you might be able to make her out.

video

We left Deville's after a drink and went to Shape, where the music was loud electro house and the kids there were all hyperactive and inconsiderate. We decided to go to a bar on the other side of town and walked all the way there only to find the queue was huge so we decided to go home. I've never seen it so busy down there.. I think there might have been a concert on or something.

Because we'd only had dinner a couple of hours earlier and I'd eaten a lot, I could have drunk several litres of alcohol and not felt intoxicated. As it was I'd only had a few drinks. I didn't think there'd be as many people out tonight as there were and according to the taxi driver, that's what everyone thought.

I'd love to find a club that doesn't play the music too loud, maybe if it had good acoustics they wouldn't have to, so you could actually have conversations with people and stuff. What's the point of going out somewhere for a drink with people if you can't even hear yourself think? I guess I wasn't in the mood for that.

How much I suck at painting

This afternoon in a fit of motivation and inspiration I decided to do some painting in our bedroom. Jason painted the ceiling about a month ago but there was a section with slightly different coloured paint from when he rinsed the roller which you just couldn't deny was there. How hard can it be? I thought, and how wrong I was.

I really wasn't keen on helping to paint the house when we originally talked about it because I knew I would be bad at it. Maybe woodwork isn't really related to painting, but I was never very good at that, I could do it, but the stuff i made did not look great.

I don't know what possessed me today to think that I would be able to do a good job painting the ceiling... I hadn't even had a drink. I guess I was keen to speed up the process of improving our bedroom. We've found the right colour paint for the wall, it's just a matter of painting everything, and then we can get Jason's dad to wallpaper the feature wall. Then all we have to do is order new blinds and carpet.

So I started getting the room ready about lunchtime. Too late already. Jason haS told me so many times how hard it is to paint in the late afternoon as the light is too dark, but at lunchtime I couldn't concieve that it would get that dark by 3 or 4pm.

I couldn't find the drop sheets so I had to go buy some more. By the time I got home it was well after 1pm. I'd put one down when Jason called at 2pm. He's on nightshift at the moment, because he's working underground for three months and they have to do nightshift. He sounded a bit worried about me painting, which I expected, but I was pretty adamant that I was going to do some. So he gave me tips and such and after I spoke to him I put the rest of the drop sheets down and started doing the trim and the cutting in (the bit you have to do around the edges with a brush).

It's practically empty!

It seemed to be taking forever, and I realised how dark it was already when I was trying to see what I had painted and what I hadn't. I started to get worried straight away and realised what Jason had meant when he said he started to stress out.

After I finally finished the cutting in I started with the roller and realised that it was physically harder than I thought it would be. My neck was killing me and I couldn't seem to get a consistent run of paint from the roller and I was leaving marks on the side and it was altogether a hell of a lot of effort required on my part and I was stressing even more.

And then I ran out of paint.

Jason managed to finish two ceilings with two thirds of a pot of paint but I didn't even get a third of the ceiling done with the last third. I guess the last bit of paint is the least.

I called Jason and wailed about how much I sucked. It was too late to go buy some more paint and I'll have to start again tomorrow and I think I'm just going to leave it for when Jason gets back home.

It's very difficult to see now the difference between what I painted and what hasn't been painted (again) without daylight, but I took some photos with the flash and you can sorta see how much I suck at using a roller.

I'm just going to have to let my feminist side rest and leave the rest for the man to do. I can't be good at everything!

Book MeMe

Pinched from Lyvvie because it's quite awesome. There are quite a few books on this list that I've been wanting to read for ages but haven't got around to. I think there's a pretty good reason that a lot of adults have only read six of the books in the top 100... most of them have been made into tv series or movies so people just watch it instead of reading it. I'm more one of those people who reads the book because they've seen the movie or series and I want more. I've also read quite a few of the books on the list because I had to for school.

"The Big Read reckons that the average adult has only read 6 of the top 100 books they've printed."

1) Look at the list and bold those you have read.
2) Italicize those you intend to read.
3) Underline the books you LOVE.

Geezer's birthday

My lovely boy has reached the ripe young age of 37 (..both in our thirties..) Naturally I bought him toys for his birthday.

I got him a second darth maul lightsaber so he could join two together to make the double bladed one. It lives in our dining room now on the fabulous sideboard..

I also got him an Admiral Ackbar bust. Isn't it beautiful? Geezer thinks so.

After having a nice cooked brekky we went shopping for a new tv. A 40 inch Sony Bravia to be exact. The shopping wasn't too much of an ordeal though the guy at harvey normans went the hard sell on a Philips, which apparently has a better picture, but didn't look as nice as the bravia. We managed to get the top of the line xbr model for the same price as the X, which was a total bonus. The only difference between the two is that the xbr has a gunmetal coloured plastic frame around the screen (and then the glass bit is around that), and the X has a plain black one. Ours is pretty. See?

We had to get rid of the cabinet we kept everything in before and we have temporarily put in on an old coffee table, but we need to find a new cabinet to put everything in sometime soon. We'll probably mount the tv on the wall, however. We'll do something about the unsightly wires soon too.

I can't wait to go home and watch it again. Geezer is cursing the fact that he's got places to go this weekend (he's still on break) and can't stay home and enjoy the tv for his entire break.

I guess apart from buying the tv we didn't do anything really different or special for JJ's birthday but we had a great day enjoying each other's company and hanging out at home together. Jason is going to be working underground for the next three months getting high voltage experience and he'll be doing nightshift for the first week of every stint, so I guess we're appreciating our time together a lot more at the moment.

Feck!

About two weeks ago, an explosion ripped apart a pipeline transporting oil and gas from offshore fields to WA's second-biggest natural gas plant on Varanus Island, about 100km off the coast of Karratha.

The Varanus venture supplies mining giant BHP Billiton's Mt Keith mine, the second-largest open pit nickel mine in the world and Newcrest's Telfer gold mine. It also supplies gas to Jundee, where I work, and Alinta Gas, which supplies gas to all of Perth, and many other companies. The incident resulted in complete shutdown of Apache's gas production operations at Varanus Island and a declaration of force majeure by Apache to all customers. Newmont switched to more expensive diesel fuel to run electricity generators.

Although we managed to get a short term gas supply contract going, that is going to run out in 12 days and I just found out today that they're going to shut down the mill (which produces the gold) for three months. It was either that or shut down the underground mining operation, and considering there are so many more people working underground, the manager decided to go with shutting the plant down. Luckily we're way ahead on our ounces this year.

It's probably going to take Apache six months to fix up the gas production operations, and it's taking its toll on industry in western australia. I don't have to worry about my job, I won't lose it, but a lot, if not most of the contractors, will end up out of a job for a while.

I didn't really realise how serious the gas situation was when the explosions first happened. Jason and I didn't use the gas heater on break the other week, but it wasn't that cold anyway. When I go home tonight it's going to be pretty cold, but I'll be going out for a few drinks and then going straight to bed, so I won't need it. I'll just have to abstain for the next week.

Kangaroos are cute!

I was driving down into the pit this morning to pick up the core from the rig and I noticed two kangaroos standing on the bund wall on the edge of the ramp looking over the edge. They looked at me while I took photos. When they hopped away I had an opportunity for a great photo of them jumping with a fairly bright background.

But I stuffed up, as you can see, the second roo didn't quite make it into the pic.

It was still pretty cool though.

I spent all day yesterday at the drill rig in the bush at Desert Dragon. The morning was a waste of time as the rods were stuck and no metres were drilled. I had nothing to do but clean out the car and read a book. At twelve o clock we moved on to the next hole and that was when I started to struggle to keep up. I didn't have time for geological logging, only sieving and chip traying. I didn't have time to eat lunch and it was exhausting. It was all made worth it by the beautiful sky on the way home, though. I took a video for you!
video

It rained heaps last night. I woke up at 1am from the noise on the roof and couldn't get back to sleep for ages. I couldn't stop thinking about rock codes and how I didn't finish logging yesterday. It's a delayed start to the day today, however, which is why I have time to write this post!

Saturday, June 14, 2008

It's been a while since I've really had a good ramble on the blog. I've been so busy the past couple of months I haven't really had time to sit and think about what to say. And I guess I've had a bit of writer's block, too. What with everyone being so techno-savvy these days you don't know who is going to come across your blog and read what you've written, so you have to be careful what you write.

Work has been pretty busy lately. I've got lots of stuff to work on, and everything is so time consuming! There are two new geologists, both girls and both on my roster. It seems like the more people there are around, the busier it is. I don't know why, but that's how it is. One of the girls is from Canada, somewhere north of Toronto, and the other is from Manchester, England. The regional geology manager was here visiting the other day and said that we would have to get more guys to balance things out in our department, which is total bullshit as no one is trying to get more girls in the maintenance department which only has one girl and about 30 men. Sexist attitudes are alive and well everywhere you go.

It rained quite a bit yesterday and the afternoon plane couldn't land as the cloud cover was too low. They turned around and went back to Perth and flew in at lunchtime today instead. It's been cold, winter seems to finally be here, though it doesn't normally rain this much in June around here.

Jason changed the light fitting and painted the ceiling in our bedroom. We still need to choose a colour for the walls and then we can wallpaper the feature wall, replace the curtains and get new carpet. I can't wait til it's done, but that's a way off yet.

Jason's xbox360 got the red rings of death and he's had to send it back to Microsoft to get a replacement. He's spewing he can't play games for a month (or however long it is).

I've had a sore throat for four days now. It's not turning into a cold, but it's not getting any worse. Jason says I'm a hypochondriac.

I'll be out in the bush for the next few days logging RC chips with the rig. Here's a photo I took at the rig about two weeks ago:

Wish me luck.

Oxygen thieves

We had dinner at a friends house the other night and these are her two cats. Jason has named them the oxygen thieves because they're so unfriendly towards anyone but their owner(s).

Sophie was not happy about being cuddled.

I've forgotten this one's name but she wouldn't let me get anywhere close and hissed at me when I chased her. hehehe

It's a face only a mother could love

Jason hearts Ross

So does Olga...

More fun at Roleystone

Yoshimi says meow.

Feed us.

Bok!

This is a nice photo, isn't it? (snort) I think my hair is lightening up.

Jason loves Jessie.

Long icelandic word

The other day Jason asked my dad what the longest icelandic word was. Dad came up with this one.

I bet there's a longer one though.

Sharlotte's party

The party went really well, considering the weather during the day. The thunder and lightning stopped and it didn't rain as heavily in the evening as during the day so flooding of the area was kept to a minimum.

There were about thirty kids and they were all well behaved. Only a couple of girls seemed a bit drunk so I took their drinks off them and made them drink water. Someone spewed in the park before they left and that was about it.

Although the plan was to keep everyone outside, they all congregated inside in the end, but they didn't make too much mess so it was okay. Jason and I started doing dishes and cleaning up before everyone started going home and the next day most of the work was just dismantling everything that we'd set up the day before.

I made up lollybags for the party because I thought it would be funny and embarrass Sharlotte. My plan backfired; everyone loved the lolly bags and I didn't have quite enough of them. I was surprised that they all started eating the lollies as soon as they got them. Maybe we should have had sweet snacks at the party instead of savouries.

So here are some pics from the party.

Sharlotte with one of her best friends, Cieran. She got a new hairdo (courtesy of us) the day before the party and is now a redhead instead of a blonde.

We bought a carton of those green vodka pre-mixed drinks. Looks like they were a bit of a hit.

Some of Sharlotte's friends got her some beautiful white leather boots for her birthday, which she loved.

How to convert a washing line into a fancy light holder.

Decorations outside.

The party was supposed to be kept outside, but all the kids seemed to want to hang inside away from the music.

The white leather couch survived it all unscathed.

Geezer getting a bit excited. Note the tarp enclosing the outdoor area (preventing rain from entering).

Teen bathroom. I only just emptied the bath of the leftover drinks today.

One of Lotti's pressies.

Post-party opening of pressies with Dad looking on.
